Pollution Prevention and Waste Management Strategy

We are pleased to share the Pollution Prevention and Waste Management Strategy a long-term plan designed to reduce pollution and manage waste in ways that reflect the unique needs of the Falkland Islands.

This strategy establishes a need for clear environmental standards, stronger regulations, improved data and monitoring, and promotes community awareness and sustainable infrastructure. It also addresses emerging challenges like plastic pollution and hazardous materials, aiming to protect our environment, health, and future. One of key actions of the strategy will be the development of detailed policy to enable the development of Pollution Prevention and Waste Management legislation.

The strategy was shaped by extensive public consultation, showing strong support for actions that protect land and freshwater. Its approval marks a significant step forward in ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Falklands.

MLA Peter Biggs, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Public Infrastructure, said:

“The Falkland Islands needs to improve how we manage pollution and waste, and this is an important step in better protecting our air, land and water. The strategy aims to promote sustainable development and to safeguard human and environmental health from the adverse effects of pollution and waste. The approval of the strategy is an important step in achieving these objectives and I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the consultation process.”
