Temporary accommodation for vulnerable people at Hillside
This week, ExCo agreed a proposal to convert the transit accommodation at Hillside Camp into a temporary supported living facility for up to ten people. Refurbishment works will begin shortly and are expected to be complete by the end of July 2021.
At the beginning of the Falkland Islands’ response to Covid-19, it was agreed with the Falklands Veteran Foundation, to temporarily move our vulnerable and elderly members of the community from the hospital, into Liberty Lodge, on a temporary basis. This was done in order to reconfigure KEMH into hot and cold zones, and to reduce the risk of these residents contracting Covid-19 in the event that the hospital was required to admit any positive cases.
However, due to increasing need, extra capacity is now required to ensure that everyone who requires residential care and support can receive this in a single location. Hillside will provide a short-term solution until residents can move to Tussac House after April 2023.
Director of Public Works, Colin Summers, said: “These plans have been developed with the wellbeing of our older and vulnerable residents in mind. While we have really appreciated Liberty Lodge’s support during the pandemic, we now require extra capacity. By refurbishing the transit accommodation at Hillside, we can provide good quality, safe and comfortable lodgings for residents requiring additional care and support until Tussac House is complete.”
