FALKLAND ISLANDS GOVERNMENT
PRESS RELEASE
28 April 2021
FIG publishes new report: State of the Falkland Islands Economy 2020
The government has today published a new report ‘State of the Falkland Islands Economy 2020’. The report was approved by ExCo earlier today and provides an overview of the economy up until the end of 2020. The document provides insight across a range of key themes, and provides international benchmarks for comparative analysis, where these exist.
While the report is broadly structured in a similar way to previous versions, there are two new sections; one outlines the evidence currently available on the impact of Covid-19 on the local economy, and the other provides data on income inequality, which was not previously available.
MLA Roger Spink, portfolio lead for national statistics and economic reporting, said: “This comprehensive report provides a valuable analysis of the performance of the Falkland Islands economy over the past year. In particular the Falkland Islands Government’s response to the global pandemic, which has been to support the welfare and wellbeing of individuals and families within our community, while at the same time helping address the raft of fiscal issues faced by local businesses due to a fall in income and cashflow challenges.
“Additionally, the introduction of data to help us better understand income inequality will be a vital new tool in financial planning and policy development. Through the use of this information we can make evidence-based decisions to help lessen this inequality and put more people on a fairer footing. We want to live in a society characterised by a wider distribution of wealth and where enterprise is rewarded, so that everyone who calls the Falkland Islands their home can benefit from economic prosperity and future sustainable growth.”
