Government publishes public consultation response on housing options
In September 2020, the Falkland Islands Government launched an eight-week public consultation that sought the views of the community on how to potentially address the issues facing housing supply and demand. The consultation ran alongside a series of public events to solicit views from as many people as possible and the feedback from these combined activities has been published today in the document ‘Housing for our Future: Public consultation on options to address the challenges of growth and affordability’.
The report summarises and provides a record of the public consultation, however it does not constitute government policy. The next step of the process will be to use this feedback to help shape more detailed proposals which will form an overarching Housing Strategy for the Falkland Islands. The strategy will be subject to more detailed, tailored engagement with the public and stakeholders.
A range of intersecting issues are explored within the new publication, including:
- Insufficient supply of rental housing in Stanley
- Affordability of rental housing in Stanley
- Affordability of home ownership in Camp and for lower income residents
- Housing quality and suitability
- Possible protections for tenants and landlords in rental accommodation
MLA Barry Elsby, Portfolio Lead for Housing, said: “The results of the report demonstrate that housing is a complex issue and there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the challenges. Although this is not a government policy document, the feedback we have received has demonstrated that there is an appetite to address these underlying challenges and barriers. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the consultation and public events, and encourage people to continue to make their voice heard as we develop the new strategy.”
