The Falkland Islands Government is pleased to announce former IJS&CE Headteacher, Mr Tom Hill, has been appointed as the new Director of Education, and will succeed Annie Tempest.

Many members of the community will remember Tom Hill and his family from their time in the Islands between 2011 and 2013.

MLA Barry Elsby, Portfolio-Holder for Education, was excited to welcome Tom back to the Islands: ‘Tom Hill will be known to many from his time here previously, and it will be a pleasure to welcome him back as Director of Education. He will inherit from Annie Tempest an Department of Education that has made great strides in recent times, culminating in a positive Ofsted inspection last month. I have no doubt Tom will build on the improvements we’ve seen in IJS&CE and at FICS and will bring about the changes we need to see in the Training Centre, and the way in which the Falkland Islands deliver vocational training. I look forward to working with him, and would also like to thank Annie Tempest for her hard work to date.’

Tom Hill was enthusiastic about his opportunity to return: ‘I am very pleased to be returning to the Education Department and am looking forward to making a personal contribution to the services we provide. My previous experiences as Headteacher at IJS/Camp Ed and as Acting Director have provided me with a good level of understanding of how Government works, and I will be in close touch in the intervening period until I take up post to ensure that the transition will be as easy as possible. As a family, we have only been away for a year and a half, but we have missed everyone and everything about the Falklands and we are looking forward to fitting back in. I am also of course, keen to get back on a motorcycle – perhaps this time I’ll have the courage to try a bit of ‘off-roading.’

Mr Hill will formally take up his position in June 2015, and in the interval Annie Tempest has agreed to provide ad hoc transitionary support to the Department of Education.
