Ian was born in the Falkland Islands and began his career on West Falklands as a stocksman in 1974. He went on to own Main Point Farm, an 18,000 acre farm which breeds fine wool sheep.
Ian was Chair of the Rural Business Association for three years until 2003, before winning a by-election the same year when he became a member of the Legislative Council. He was re-elected in 2005 to serve a further four years and returned to office following another by-election in 2011. He went on to contest and win two further terms of office in 2013 and 2017.
Ian has a keen interest in all sports, particularly football; he also enjoys training sheepdogs and reading. He has one son, Matthew.
Ian has lead portfolio responsibility for Health and Social Services, and secondary portfolio responsibility for Natural Resources.
