New Commercial Fishery to Open
A new fishery is to be opened up in Falklands waters. Exploratory fishing and surveys of grenadier (a marine fish of the family Macrouridae) have been carried out since 2006, with the most recent taking place early this year. According to the Director of Fisheries, John Barton, it has now been sufficiently researched for it to enter the Individual Transferable Quota (ITQ) system as a commercial fishery. The fishery has also reported good catches of loligo squid, with more than 7,000 tonnes caught in the first two weeks of the season.
