LOCAL SCULPTOR COMMISSIONED FOR BARONESS THATCHER MEMORIAL
The Falkland Islands Government has commissioned local sculptor Steve Massam to produce the official memorial to the late Baroness Thatcher. The commission was approved by the previous Executive Council of the Falkland Islands.
The memorial will be a bronze bust of Baroness Thatcher, mounted on a plinth of local stone, and, subject to planning approval, will be located on Thatcher Drive in the heart of Stanley.
The likeness will be created by Mr Massam, and cast in bronze by a London-based foundry who work regularly with Mr Massam, and indeed cast the statute of Baroness Thatcher for the Houses of Parliament. Once cast, the bust will be shipped to the Islands, where it will be formally inaugurated.
Mr Massam, who is well-known in the Islands for his bronze sculptures of local wildlife commented, “I was both excited and a little daunted at the prospect of trying to capture the likeness of such an iconic figure. I have been sculpting for many years, and cast a limited collection of true bronze figures back in the early 1990s. Needless to say I’m thrilled to have been given this unique opportunity to produce what will be the Falkland Islands’ first piece of public art that will I hope touch the hearts of local community.”
