The Falkland Islands Government is pleased to announce the promotion of Len McGill to Superintendent and his appointment as the new Chief of Police. Len will begin his new post from 1st June, taking over from Barry Marsden who will be focusing on his role as Director of Emergency Services, where previously the two jobs were combined.

Len commented on his appointment, “I am honoured to have been appointed as Chief of Police.  I look forward to continuing to develop the service and the officers and staff within it.  I wish to acknowledge the support and the professional development afforded me by all my colleagues and the community, during my 29 years of service so far.  I look forward to continuing to serve the people of the Falkland Islands and taking on the challenges that will undoubtedly arise in the Falklands’ future.”

Director of Emergency Services, Barry Marsden, said “I am absolutely delighted that Len McGill has been appointed as the Chief of Police. Len has dedicated the majority of his adult career to the police service and is one of very few Islanders who have been career police officers. He is an incredibly hard-working individual who has excellent leadership and organisational skills and it is refreshing to see an Islander progress through every rank in the service to become the Chief of Police. I wish him all the very best for the future and I am sure the RFIP will go from strength to strength under his direction.”

Portfolio holder MLA Mike Summers added “Len’s promotion to Chief of Police is just reward for his hard work and dedication to policing in the Falklands for many years. He brings a depth of understanding of Falklands life that greatly assists the many practical and common sense decisions that have to be taken on a daily basis; combined with a clear understanding of developments in policing in other jurisdictions he is uniquely qualified to take on the role, and to develop a police force that is relevant to our community. He will receive our firm support in the many important tasks ahead”.
