The first stamps for the Dependencies were issued in 1944 and comprised of the George VI definitive set being overprinted with the name of the four dependencies: Graham Land, South Georgia, South Orkneys, and South Shetlands. In later years the Dependencies were split into two, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and the British Antarctic Territory.

The Government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands is administered from Government House in the Falkland Islands and supports its own Stamp Advisory Committee who are responsible for the design concept for each issue of stamps produced. The policy for South Georgia is to produce as few issues as possible per year averaging two main issues, generally of local interest, and whenever required the release of omnibus series are also considered. All First Day Covers and other philatelic material are cancelled at King Edward Point post office before returning to Stanley for distribution.
