9p - Grytviken and Sugartop Mountain

Grytviken is one of the several abandoned land whaling stations. It was the first land station started in late 1904 and continued to work until 1964.

Mount Sugartop is 2323 metres in height.

17p - Old Sealing Ships in Grytviken

Dias (left) is 33.1 m long, 167 tons and was built at Beverley, near Hull in 1906. Dias was always a sealing ship.

Albatros is 32.8 m long and 210 tons and built at Selvik in Norway. She was a first a whale catcher and later a sealer.

35p - King Edward Point

King Edward Point is about 1 km from Grytviken and was established as the centre of administration for the whaling stations. The building second from left is Discovery House and was built in 1925 as a laboratory for Discovery Investigations.

The house was later used as accommodation for administration staff.

40p - Arrival at South Georgia

On arrival at South Georgia one is amazed by the beautiful scenery of snow covered mountains, glaciers and fjords.

Mount Paget is the highest mountain standing at 2934 metres.

65p - The Church at Grytviken

The church at Grytviken originally stood by Strommen in Norway. It was dismantled, taken to South Georgia and rebuilt. The Church bells were first rung at midnight on Christmas Eve 1913.

The Church was consecrated on Christmas Day, the same year.
