The Age of Victoria

Issue Date: 24 May 2001

The Age of Victoria

This issue commemorates the life of Queen Victoria, our longest reigning monarch (1837 - 1901).

The issue provides a glimpse of the Falklands during "Victorian Times" and covers a variety of topics appropriate to the era.

The first Falkland Islands postage stamp issued in 1878 is depicted in the 3p value.

The 10p value shows the SS Great Britain in full sail prior to the storm damage that led to her being condemned and sold to the Falkland Islands Company.

Stanley Harbour as it was seen in 1888 is shown in sepia tone on the 20p value stamp.

The 43p value depicts Cape Pembroke Lighthouse. The telephone inset on this stamp signifies that the first telephone line in the Falklands was laid between the lighthouse and Stanley in 1897.

The 93p value shows Royal Marines in the uniforms on 1900.

The £1.50 value shows a striking painting (State Portrait) of Queen Victoria by Fraz Xavier Winterhalter in 1859.

The Souvenir Sheetlet, value £1, depicts the Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park with the stamp area showing the funeral procession of Queen Victoria through the streets of Windsor.
