Stamp News: August 2008 Collecting stamps is a rewarding way of learning about distant places. The history, wildlife and way of life can be found in the stamps of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, and British Antarctic Territory. Although the Philatelic Bureau was only established in 1978, the Falkland Islands has been issuing stamps since 1878, prior to which letters were simply franked to indicate that postage had been paid. Please note that all First Day Covers and stamps for the Falkland Islands and British Antarctic Territory are available for purchase for one year after their release date. New Definitive Issues - The Falkland Islands will be withdrawing the current Birds Definitive Issue in 2008 and replacing it with another definitive issue. The British Antarctic Territory will replace their Definitive Issue in late 2008 and the South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands will replace their Definitive Issue in 2009. Further details about the issues will be published later in the year. |
