Holiday Programme

The BBC Holiday Programme sent a crew to the Islands in November for a travel feature to be broadcast in March next year. The programme’s presenter, Craig Doyle, described it as a "real joy" to be in the Islands and said he was "overawed" by the wildlife.

Stanley Services - Change in Ownership

Following a buy out, Stanley Services Limited is now owned by the Falkland Islands Government, which holds just over 62% of the shares, and S & J D Robertson which has 38%.

Appointments Update

Sylvia Cole has been appointed the new Director of Education. Mrs Cole joins from Leicester City Council, where she held the post of Acting Assistant Director of Education (Schools and College Support).
Falkland Islander Andrew Newman is the new Director of Civil Aviation, replacing Gerald Cheek who is retiring after holding the post for 20 years.

Wetlands Internationally Recognised

Two sites in the Falkland Islands, Sea Lion Island and Bertha’s Beach, have fulfilled stringent criteria to be designated for the Ramsar 'List of Wetlands of International Importance'. Twenty-five species of waterfowl, as defined under the Ramsar Convention,



Silvery Grebe
breed in the Islands including the Falklands Flightless Steamer Duck, the Upland Goose and the Silvery Grebe. The Falklands has most of the world’s population of the Ruddy-headed Goose. More information can be obtained from Falklands Conservation at www.falklandsconservation.com

In the Media Spotlight

To mark the 20th Anniversary of the Conflict, the leading print and broadcast media are planning to run Falkland Islands stories next year, with many news crews and journalists visiting in order to report on the Islands of today and how they have developed since 1982.

Amongst others, comedian Jim Davidson is due to travel out with a BBC film crew in May to film a special feature, including a concert. Food and Travel magazine and BBC Wildlife Magazine are both featuring Falkland Islands features in their January issues.

Falkland House Showcase

As Kevin Schafer's Exhibition, "Falkland Islands: Wildlife Paradise", draws to a close, pictures are still available for purchase. A collection of images by Ian Strange will open at the end of January 2002.

British Parliamentarians visiting the Islands

A delegation of British Parliamentarians will visit the Islands in February with the Falkland Islands Government UK Representative, Sukey Cameron.

Falkland Islands Photographic Exhibition

Falkland Islands Photographic Exhibition in Norwich, 1 - 31 March, at the John Innes Centre which is located near to the University of East Anglia. Other venues and dates to be confirmed.
