Biography:
Richard Stevens was born in Plymouth, England, in 1955. He spent most of his childhood in a small village in Kent, attending a primary school in a neighbouring village, and going on to Longfield secondary modern. On leaving Longfield, he worked for an Agricultural Contractor carrying out a range of skills from catching poultry on contract, to driving combine harvesters. In the mid 1970's he worked for Kimberly Clarke to earn enough money to put himself through a commercial diving course at Fort Bovisand in Devon.
In 1977 he travelled to the Falkland Islands to take up a post of Peripatetic teacher, travelling around the settlements and outside houses of East and West Falkland, as well as some of the outer Islands.
In 1984 he married Toni and they bought Port Sussex Farm, a sub-division of San Carlos, and they have farmed this land from that time to the present day.
Richard was first elected to the Legislature in 1993 and served until 1997. He was elected for a second term in November 2005 and currently holds the Education Portfolio which covers all the schools and training facility, youth development, art and culture and the leisure centre which is part of the Falkland Islands Community School building. He is also second elected member on the Land Use and Public Services portfolio and third elected member on the Health and Public Protection portfolio.
To relax, Richard likes to socialise with family and friends, read, watch football and go fishing. Richard and Toni have two grown up children who are at university in the United Kingdom.
