Biography:

Dick Sawle was born in Sheffield in the UK in 1954.  He was educated in Lancashire at Rossall School, and post A levels studied Spanish, South American Studies and Egyptology at Liverpool University.  After University he did a postgraduate teaching certificate at Westminster College in Oxford.  His first teaching job was at a boarding school in Shropshire, where he taught Spanish and French as well as a variety of outdoor pursuits including climbing, windsurfing, skiing and squash.  He also taught English in Spain.

Dick came to the Falklands in 1986 to teach Spanish for two years.  When his contract had finished, he continued in the Falklands, got married and founded his own fishing company with his wife Judith.  They have two grown-up children – Jamie and Felicity.
Their fishing company, Seaview Limited, grew and expanded and with Spanish partners, the business expanded to two more joint venture vessel-owning companies and became one of the larger players in the Loligo fishery.  Seaview has operated the only cold storage facility in the Falklands since 1990.

In 2009 Dick and Judith decided to retire from fishing and Dick made the decision to embark on a political career.

His hobbies have been many and varied.  He was the first person to cross the Falkland Sound on a windsurfer in 1987, is a keen motorcycle rider (on and off-road), enjoys fishing (with little success as far as local trout are concerned!), and nowadays enjoys talking about climbing exploits when given the opportunity!  He is a keen guitar player (electric and loud) and enjoys choral music as well as classical and rock’n’roll.  He is sometimes seen in church and enjoys fast cars when he gets the chance.
