Safeguarding heritage for future generations is another concern. The Falkland Islands Museum & National Trust is committed to protecting and preserving the unique heritage of the Islands and works to promote awareness and appreciation of this fascinating history.
The Trust's responsibilities are wide-ranging and include the protection of the many shipwrecks and hulks around the Islands (more than 100 recorded), caring for and recording sites of historic significance - such as early settlements, Camp cemeteries and stone corrals - as well as collecting and sharing information on all aspects of Falklands history.
A comprehensive and diverse collection is held at Britannia House Museum. The base of all Trust activities, the Museum receives more than 10,000 visitors annually and is a popular Stanley attraction, telling the story of Island life from discovery to the present day.
Activities are Island-wide and Museum staff have established several small Camp museums, the latest being at North Arm, and hope to develop more.
Young Islanders are encouraged to enjoy local history by joining the PastFinders club, sponsored by the fishing company Fortuna Limited, and adults can become involved with Trust projects as volunteers or Friends.
